Cosmetic ear surgery can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. It creates a new natural shape and bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. A change in ear shape will not affect hearing.
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and light sedation. It takes one to two hours, depending on how complex the ear is. The incision is behind the ear, at the skin fold where the ear is joined to the head. The surgeon will remove the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the result. Surgeon may trim the cartilage, shaping it into a more desirable form and then pin the cartilage back, fix with permanent sutures to secure the cartilage. But in other instances, the surgeon will not remove any cartilage, only using stitches to hold the cartilage permanently in place. The risks are minimal which include very rare infections, poor healing or possibility of recurrence of the deformity.
There will be soft dressings applied to the ears for a few days which may be mild discomfort. Be careful not to put any pressure on the ear areas during your sleep. You can use travel pillow for avoid ear pressure during sleeping time. Soft headbands are sometimes recommended to hold the ears in the desired position for two weeks after the surgery. Surgical scars are well hidden within the natural creases of the ear.
